After 7 years of maintaining a legal technology consulting firm as a side business, Barron Henley left private practice in 1997 at Kemp Schaeffer & Rowe (Columbus, OH) to pursue his true passion (legal technology). In the same year, Barron took up residence as Executive Vice President of Legal Technology at Matrix Consulting in Dublin, OH. On several occasions prior to 1997, Barron had spoken with his friend and fellow lawyer Paul Unger about the possibility of starting a technology consulting firm. After taking the plunge himself, Barron soon re-contacted Paul to see if he would be interested in leaving his litigation practice and joining him. In 1998, Paul joined Barron at HMU as Vice President and they set about building their business focused on helping lawyers utilize technology to streamline their practices. Terry March joined Matrix later in 1998 as a document assembly expert and was soon leading that department. Upon reaching critical mass in 2000, Barron, Paul and Terry bought out the legal tech side of Matrix Consulting and formed Henley March & Unger Consulting ("HMU") on February 14, 2000. Since that time, HMU has gone from 3 people to 16, developed over 1,300 clients in 29 states, and added services to encompass virtually any legal tech issue a law firm or legal department might face.
