BY DEBBIE FOSTER

I’ve spent my career working with law firms, and I’ve watched the same thing happen over and over.

Someone is great at the work. Really great. The paralegal who keeps everything running. The administrator who can make sense of chaos. The attorney everyone wants on their team. The firm notices, and it promotes them.

Then the job changes completely. Setting direction. Giving feedback. Holding standards. Navigating conflict. Making decisions that affect entire teams. Every one of those is a learnable skill, and almost nobody gets taught a single one of them on the way up.

That’s why Stephanie Everett and I wrote Be a Next Level Leader: The Four Cornerstones of Law Firm Leadership. It’s available today on Amazon, in paperback and ebook.

Law firms are complicated places to lead. Partnership structures. Roles that were never really defined. Responsibility that runs out ahead of authority. Most of the leaders I work with are accountable for outcomes they don’t fully control, which means the leadership that works in this environment gets built on influence instead of a title. That’s a skill, and it can be built on purpose.

The four cornerstones didn’t start as a book. Stephanie and I built them into the Next Level Leader program and refined them with law firms across the country, and the book is one piece of a larger system. There’s a companion workbook for doing the work rather than just reading about it. There’s Foundations, a cohort program for leaders who want to move through the cornerstones with a group. There are assessments, and a community of law firm leaders working on the same things at the same time. The book stands on its own. It’s also a door into the rest of it.

Leading Self is the internal work. Managing your own state, following through, owning outcomes without deflection. A leader’s energy sets the tone in a room before anybody says a word, whether they mean it to or not. We call it bringing the weather.

From there the framework moves outward. Leading People is the relational work, the trust and development and hard conversations. Leading Operations is the execution work. Leading Forward is the strategic work of moving the firm from where it is to where it needs to be. The book takes them one at a time.

None of this is personality. All of it is practice. That’s the premise of the book, and it’s why we wrote it: to put language around the work and make it something you can build on purpose.

The leaders who’ve read early copies keep telling us they see themselves in the stories, and they walk away knowing how to show up differently for their firms. That’s exactly what we hoped for.

Be a Next Level Leader is out today.
