MAINTAIN ACCESS TO YOUR FILES - WHEREVER YOU ARE
I have around 56,000 files in 832 folders that I synchronize daily between my laptop and my server. By "synchronize," I mean that I want the files & folders on my laptop to be exactly the same as corresponding files & folders on my server. If files are added, deleted or changed on my laptop or the server, I want those changes mirrored on the other device. I specifically don't want or need my files in the cloud; and I don't want to run Dropbox on my server.
To handle this task, I have used several programs over the years including Microsoft's free SyncToy and ViceVersa by TGRMN Software. However, I recently purchased a new computer and decided to try another program. After some research and a couple of trials, I have settled on GoodSync which I've found to be significantly faster than other programs I've used, easy to set up and powerful (free trial and $29.95 to buy).
GoodSync has versions for Windows (I'm running Windows 8 Pro), Mac & Linux. They also offer a GoodSync2Go product which allows you to sync files between multiple computers and devices from a flash drive or external hard drive ($39.95). Finally, GoodSync offers free apps for iOS and Android devices so that files can be synced between your computer and mobile devices. If you need to synchronize a lot of files between computers, a server, a flash drive, external hard drive, smartphone or tablet, GoodSync is an excellent option.
